Studio or Mobile Van: Which Is Better for a Nervous or Reactive Dog?

Not every dog loves a grooming appointment. Some are anxious in new places. Some bark at every other dog they meet. Some just need things quiet. We have both a studio on Francis Street in Longmont and mobile vans, so we can help you think through which setup suits your dog.

What a mobile appointment is like

Our mobile groomers come to your home. Here's what that means for your dog:

  • One-on-one time with a groomer, which is good for reactive dogs
  • A quiet setting, away from a room full of other dogs
  • Cage-free
  • Faster, because there is no waiting for a turn
  • No drop-off and no pick-up for you

For a dog who gets worked up around other dogs, that last list matters. There's no waiting room, no other dog barking from the next table, and no car ride across town to get there.

Reactive dogs are more common than you'd think. Google reviewer Don Walker wrote: "Our little guy absolutely LOVES people, but absolutely HATES other dogs. This service is a blessing to us and him. Kayla is awesome with how she handles him and keeps him clean and looking dapper!"

What the van can and can't do

Mobile grooming has limits, and it's better to know them up front:

  • Dogs should be no more than about 65 lbs.
  • A regular grooming schedule is required.
  • Level parking is preferred, so the van can sit steady.

Appointments run Monday through Friday, depending on your location. We run a Longmont van and a Loveland van. The Longmont area includes Longmont, Mead, Berthoud, parts of north and east Boulder, Firestone and Frederick. The Loveland van covers from Longmont up to north Loveland (Highway 392 south) and parts of the I-25 corridor.

Starting prices are by weight: under 20 lbs, Bath $88.00, Bath Plus+ $110.00 and Full Groom $165.00. For 20-40 lbs, Bath $104.50, Bath Plus+ $137.50 and Full Groom $192.50. For 40-65 lbs, Bath $121.00, Bath Plus+ $165.00 and Full Groom $220.00. Contact us for your dog's price estimate. The request form asks for a photo of your pet, which helps us get the estimate right.

When the studio is the better fit

The van isn't right for every dog. The studio might suit you better if:

  • Your dog is over about 65 lbs.
  • You're outside the van's service area.
  • You don't have a level spot to park.
  • Your dog's coat has gone a long time between grooms and needs more room and more hands.
  • You want a specific day or time that the van schedule doesn't offer.

Studio appointments run Monday through Friday, starting as early as 7:15 am and running until about 3:00 pm, with last pick-up at 5:30 pm. That drop-off and pick-up rhythm works well for many households, and it means your dog can be in one place with the full team's tools on hand.

A studio is a busier place by nature: other dogs, dryers and people coming and going. Many dogs are fine with it, and some even enjoy it. If your dog is nervous but not reactive, a studio visit can still go well, especially with the right plan.

If you choose the studio with a nervous dog

  • Tell us at booking. Say what sets your dog off: dryers, clippers, other dogs, being picked up, having feet touched.
  • Ask about an EXPRESS groom. For a $25 fee, your dog is with one groomer start to finish with no interruptions. It must be pre-arranged, and you should allow up to 4 hours for services.
  • Keep the morning calm. A walk and a potty break before the car helps.
  • Don't rush the drop-off. A short, friendly hello beats a long goodbye.

If anxiety is severe, such as shaking, panting that won't settle or trying to bolt, talk to your vet or a trainer. Grooming can't fix that on its own, and we'd rather you have the right support.

How to decide

If your dog has a reactive streak and fits the size and schedule requirements, start with the van. If your dog is large, the coat is overdue or the van isn't an option in your area, the studio is the next step, and an EXPRESS groom makes it a lot calmer. In either case, a photo and a few honest sentences about your dog help us plan.

Our mobile client list is open, so you can request a booking right now. Use the request form to tell us about your dog, your coat questions and anything that worries you, and we'll let you know whether the van is a good match.
